Two independent California businesses, a shared appreciation for traditional food, and three delicious varieties of handmade Ukrainian pierogi.
Good food has a way of bringing people together. It connects us with family traditions, introduces us to new cultures, and reminds us that some of the best meals are made with simple ingredients and a little extra care.
That's something we believe in at Ukrainian Flavors, and it's one of the reasons we're happy to work with Meat & Essentials, an independent neighborhood butcher shop and specialty food market in San Marino, California.
Today, customers can find three of our most popular handmade frozen Ukrainian pierogi varieties at Meat & Essentials, ready to take home and enjoy with family and friends.
Discovering San Marino, a Charming City Near Pasadena
Located in the San Gabriel Valley, just northeast of Los Angeles, San Marino is a beautiful residential community known for its tree-lined streets, quiet neighborhoods, and strong local character.
The city is home to the famous Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens, one of Southern California's most loved cultural destinations.
But beyond its gardens and historic homes, San Marino also has something special: independent neighborhood businesses that bring personality and quality to the local shopping experience.
One of these places is Meat & Essentials, located on Huntington Drive.
Meet Meat & Essentials: A Neighborhood Market with a Story
Meat & Essentials was founded by Eagle Yu and Mel Cain, who opened their San Marino shop in 2022.
Their story began while working at the Melrose Place Farmers Market in Los Angeles, where their shared interest in food eventually grew into a business.
Together, they created something more personal than an ordinary grocery store.
Meat & Essentials specializes in thoughtfully sourced meats, house-made sausages, specialty groceries, and carefully selected products from independent producers. Visitors can also enjoy coffee and freshly prepared food.
Their approach is simple: know where your food comes from, care about how it's made, and create a welcoming place for the neighborhood.
It's a philosophy that feels very familiar to us.
Two California Businesses, Shared Values
Ukrainian Flavors began in 2023 as a small family-owned food business in Camarillo, California.
Our goal was to preserve traditional Ukrainian family recipes and introduce more people in California to the food we grew up enjoying.
We believe that food is more than something to eat. It's part of our culture, our memories, and the way families spend time together.
That's why we continue to prepare our Ukrainian dishes by hand, in small batches, using simple ingredients and traditional recipes.
We use avocado oil in our dishes and focus on making food that feels like something prepared in a family kitchen.
While Meat & Essentials and Ukrainian Flavors make different kinds of food, we share an appreciation for craftsmanship, quality ingredients, and the people behind each product.

We're happy that our handmade pierogi have found a place in their San Marino market.
Three Varieties of Handmade Ukrainian Pierogi Available in San Marino
If you're looking for authentic Ukrainian pierogi near Pasadena or in the San Gabriel Valley, you can now find three of our classic varieties at Meat & Essentials.
1. Potato & Cheese Pierogi
A traditional Ukrainian favorite made with soft dough and a comforting filling of potatoes and cheese.
These pierogi have a mild, creamy flavor and taste especially good with butter, sour cream, or caramelized onions.
2. Potato & Onion Pierogi
Filled with potatoes and slowly caramelized onions, these pierogi have a rich, savory flavor with a natural sweetness from the onions.
They're a wonderful choice for anyone who enjoys simple, traditional comfort food.
3. Potato & Mushroom Pierogi
A delicious combination of potatoes and mushrooms wrapped in tender handmade dough.
The mushrooms add a deeper, earthy flavor, making this variety especially satisfying.
All three varieties are handmade and sold frozen, so you can keep them in your freezer until you're ready for a delicious Ukrainian meal.

How to Cook Frozen Ukrainian Pierogi at Home
One of the best things about our frozen pierogi is how easy they are to prepare.
You don't need to spend hours cooking to enjoy a traditional Ukrainian dinner.
Cooking instructions:
- Bring a large pot of water to a gentle boil.
- Add the frozen pierogi directly to the water. There's no need to thaw them first.
- Cook for approximately 6 minutes, stirring gently to prevent sticking.
- Remove the pierogi with a slotted spoon and serve with butter, sour cream, or caramelized onions.
- For a different texture, you can also briefly pan-fry the boiled pierogi in a little butter or oil until lightly golden.
They're delicious as a main dish, a side dish, or part of a family dinner.
Why We Freeze Our Handmade Ukrainian Food
Freezing allows us to prepare traditional Ukrainian dishes in small batches while giving customers the convenience of keeping them at home.
Our pierogi are handmade before freezing, preserving the traditional preparation process without requiring customers to make the dough and fillings themselves.
For busy families, that means having a comforting meal ready to cook whenever they need it.
